Chi soffre per ottenere la promozione è il Northampton che dopo la beffa della passata stagione rischia un nuovo sorpasso sul traguardo quest'anno: sarà necessario un successo a Birkenhead contro il Tranmere per tenere a bada la rimonta di uno Stockport che non dovrebbe avere difficoltà contro un Hartlepool per cui è arrivata anche la matematica a sancire il ritorno in National dopo appena 2 stagioni.

Sesta e settima ribaltano il verdetto della Regular Season, in particolare sorprende l'eliminazione del Woking che aveva chiuso con 11 punti in più rispetto al Bromley. Barnet-Boreham Wood era un derbyssimo che si giocava inoltre in contemporanea con la gara del vicino Arsenal. Ha la meglio la squadra meno blasonata che ora proverà a fare lo scherzetto tanto temuto al Notts.

Come da pronostico le Blades non rendono la vita dura a un loro tifoso e grande ex come Neil Warnock, che fa l'ennesimo capolavoro della sua lunghissima carriera salvando i Terriers.

La terza retrocessione è dunque del Reading che scende dopo 10 stagioni consecutive in Championship (e una finale playoff persa proprio contro l'Huddersfield nel 2017).
I Royals mancavano dalla terza serie addirittura dal 2001/2002 e vedono così terminare il periodo d'oro della loro storia (nel vecchio millennio 0 tornei di massima serie e solo 11 di seconda). Memorabile la stagione del debutto in Premier nel 2006/2007 quando il club del presidente Madejski e del manager Steve Coppell mantenne inalterato l'organico che l'anno prima consentì una promozione con numeri da record e stupì tutti proponendo un calcio offensivo e bello da vedere sfiorando l'accesso alla Coppa UEFA. Già l'anno dopo il club, privato di alcune pedine fondamentali, faticò e venne sorpreso dalla rimonta finale del Fulham, retrocedendo. Nel 2012/2013 il terzo e ultimo campionato in Premier, ma la squadra fu sempre arenata a fondo classifica senza mai avere speranze salvezza.
Ora un futuro nebuloso, con la retrocessione sancita di fatto dalla penalizzazione per irregolarità economiche, la seconda ricevuta in altrettante stagioni.

Sul fondo il Cambridge sfrutta il jolly del calendario e si salva, MK Dons giù dopo 4 anni, mentre il Morecambe vede terminare la sua migliore esperienza dopo 2 stagioni. Ufficiale anche la retrocessione dopo 5 anni, già certa per via della differenza reti, dell'Accrington Stanley.

Grosso, grossissimo spavento per il Notts County che va sotto di 2 reti nel primo tempo e agguanta il 2-2 al sesto minuto dei sette di recupero assegnati. Poi il gol che evita i rigori al 119'! Altrettanto pirotecnica l'altra semifinale con il Chesterfield che stacca il pass per Wembley.

Stavolta il Northampton non si fa beffare, passa subito in vantaggio a Prenton Park e gestisce bene il risultato tornando in League One dopo 2 stagioni. Si è giocato fino all'ultimo secondo questo campionato: la clamorosa sconfitta del Salford ha dato delle chances al Mansfield che in pieno recupero ha trovato il gol del raddoppio ma non quello dello 0-3 che avrebbe significato playoff perché a parità di differenza reti gli Stags avrebbero segnato più reti. Sarà così 'derby' tra Salford e Stockport in semifinale mentre il Bradford di Mark Hughes se la vedrà col Carlisle.

Ultima giornata con tutti i riflettori puntati sulla lotta per l'ultimo posto playoff. In scena il suicidio del Millwall che sopra di 3-1 all'intervallo (addirittura 5° davanti al Coventry), subisce la rimonta del Blackburn nella ripresa. Basterebbe anche il pari perché il WBA balbetta e infine perderà, ma il Sunderland all'improvviso si sveglia e getta nel panico i londinesi che si riversano in attacco e si beccano pure il 4° gol dei Rovers in contropiede. Quindi saranno i Black Cats a partecipare ai playoff, a caccia di una doppia promozione che chiuderebbe il periodo più buio della storia del club.

Era scritto che la seconda promozione di questa storica stagione di National League sarebbe dovuta toccare al Notts County. I bianconeri sono andati sotto a inizio partita e hanno pareggiato anche la loro seconda sfida playoff sul finale, al 88'. Chesterfield nuovamente avanti nei supplementari, ma il Notts non si è arreso e ha riagguantato il pari, prima di vincere ai rigori. Notts che in 2 sfide playoff è stato in vantaggio per appena 2 minuti su 240 (gli ultimi di recupero della semifinale). Ritorno in Football League dopo 4 stagioni.

Dall'altra c'è una storica prima volta per l'Oxford City che travolge nel primo tempo il Saint Albans.

A Wembley in scena una finale incredibile tra due squadre che rappresentano nel miglior modo possibile la follia del football inglese. Due storie di cadute e redenzione e per una delle due il finale sarà lieto già tra pochi giorni mentre l'altra dovrà ancora attendere per completare la risalita dagli inferi.

Il Luton manca dalla massima serie dal 1991/92, ultimo anno prima della creazione della Premier League di cui fu fondatore ma a cui non prese mai parte!
Gli Hatters finirono in crisi economica a fine anni '00 e iniziarono una serie di retrocessioni, tre consecutive, facilitate anche da delle pesantissime penalizzazioni per i gravissimi guai finanziari (anche un -30 nel 2008/09) che portarono il club in appena 3 stagioni dalla Championship alla National League, fuori dai professionisti.
Il club del piccolo e affascinante Kenilworth Road riuscì a stabilizzarsi nel massimo torneo non professionistico d'Inghilterra. Perse due finali playoff, contro York e AFC Wimbledon, una semifinale e in un'occasione mancò persino la post-season. La svolta arriva però nel 2014 quando il gli Hatters dominarono il torneo e fecero il primo passo in avanti tornando in Football League. Poi una doppia promozione tra il 2018 e il 2019, per tornare in quella Championship abbandonata all'inizio della grande crisi. L'anno scorso la partecipazione ai playoff, sorprendente, ma che dava il segnale di come il club stesse operando bene.


Il Coventry invece era presenza fissa dei primi anni della Premier League e retrocedette al termine della stagione 2000/01 dopo 34 anni consecutivi di militanza in massima serie.
Il declino del club iniziò nel 2005 con l'addio allo stadio di Highfield Road per la nuova e più capiente Coventry Arena, impianto però troppo costoso per le casse del club, che finì in mano al fondo Sisu nel 2007.
Senza spendere per contenere i debiti il club finì presto in League One, ma sicuramente la cosa peggiore fu il mancato accordo per il pagamento dell'Arena, litigando con il Coventry Wasps di rugby: il club fu costretto a emigrare a Northampton, oltre 40 km di distanza.
Nel 2017 il Coventry tocca il fondo retrocedendo in League Two. Pochi immaginano che sarà l'inizio della rinascita. Già l'anno dopo il club vince i playoff e risale in League One (insieme peraltro al Luton), mentre nel 2020 arriva con lo stop per la pandemia il ritorno in Championship grazie al primo posto parziale in terza serie.
Nuovi problemi tra il fondo, il comune di Coventry e i Wasps portano il club a giocare le gare interne a Birmingham tra il 2019 e il 2021.
Pochi mesi fa la vendita della Sisu all'ex socio di minoranza King, ora proprietario del 100% delle quote societarie.


D'altra parte fine dei sogni per le nordiche Sunderland e Middlesbrough.
Lavoro enorme fatto dai manager Mowbray e Carrick. Il primo ha portato i Black Cats, neopromossi, a giocarsela sino alla fine per un clamoroso Double Up, risultato incredibile non tanto per la dimensione del club quanto per le aspettative stagionali che volevano una tranquilla salvezza.
Il secondo ha preso una squadra di buone potenzialità in zona retrocessione e la ha spinta sino a un passo dalla incredibile rimonta allo Sheffield United prima del crollo di forma del mese finale tramutatosi poi in due sfide playoff in cui il Boro è rimasto a bocca asciutta.

La finale è in programma il 27 maggio.
